How long does a driver's license actually take?
The time it takes to get a driver’s license from registration to issuance varies greatly, as it depends on various institutions. It starts with the driving school, goes on to the lowest traffic authority, which in Düsseldorf is the Road Traffic Office, and usually ends at TÜV Rheinland, as this organization is responsible for taking the driving tests.
If everything goes well, really very well, you could be finished within 3 weeks (please also note our information on intensive training). On average, we recommend a period of 4 months. However, there are no upper time limits, which does not mean that the applications submitted or the agreed contracts do not expire.
How much does a car driver's license cost in full?
It is almost impossible to answer this question honestly and seriously. This is because the final price of a driver’s license depends on many different factors, such as
- Basic amount
- Driving lesson prices
- Audit costs
- Number of driving lessons required
- Complexity of the audit area
- Number of tests required
- External costs such as first aid costs, application fees, TÜV inspection fees, number of accompanying persons (for BF17), possibly whether an expert opinion is required…
- and not least on the talent of the respective applicant, as well as
- resilience and stress resistance during the exams
Can I attend theory lessons as often as I want?
In principle, there are no upper limits here either. The legislator only stipulates a minimum level of training. In the case of a first-time car driver’s license, this stipulates 12 basic lessons and 2 additional lessons. However, if you extend your driving license, the number of basic lessons is halved to 6.
How many questions are there in total on the theory exam?
We currently (as of 05.2025) have around 1,450 questions in Germany (class B – initial purchase). These questions are currently revised twice a year. This means that corrections, changes or additions are made. Some questions are deleted completely, while others are added from scratch.
These modifications primarily take place on April 1 and October 1 of the year.
Can I choose my driving instructor or the vehicle I want to drive?
In principle, we also try to respond completely to the wishes of our customers. However, it must be clear that we do not have an unlimited number of driving instructors or vehicles to exchange, but that each driving instructor is usually assigned a vehicle.
This means that we may not always be able to produce the desired and suitable combination, but we try our best.
What are the requirements for the intensive course to run really quickly?
In order for an intensive course to run smoothly and in a short time, certain requirements must be met:
- The application for a driver’s license must be submitted to the competent authority at least 8 weeks in advance – including complete and valid documents.
- It is also important that there are no obstacles, such as previous traffic offenses, criminal offenses or problems with alcohol and drugs. In such cases, for example, an MPU may be required.
- You must also ensure that you are fully available for the entire duration of the intensive course, as the schedule is tightly planned and allows little flexibility.
